Celebrating the opening of Velocity at South Kirkland Park and Ride, County Executive Dow Constantine and Imagine Housing and other officials.

Last fall Metro celebrated the opening of the new South Kirkland Park and Ride – part of a seven-acre mixed use development located in Bellevue and Kirkland. Today another milestone was reached when Velocity – a new transit-oriented apartment community – opened its doors to 58 families who will take up residence in its affordable apartments.

Velocity is the newest edition to the Imagine Housing family. It is part of the South Kirkland Park and Ride redevelopment project and a product of a successful partnership between King County, King County Metro Transit, the Washington State Housing Finance Commission, the cities of Kirkland and Bellevue, and A Regional Coalition for Housing, the Federal Transit Administration and Washington State Department of Transportation.

King County Executive Dow Constantine attended the Velocity grand opening today where he spoke about how this project meets many of the goals of the county: building equity and opportunity by investing in affordable housing for people with very low incomes; improving access to transit and decreasing reliance on personal vehicles and promoting the use of public transportation, walking, and bicycling; and reducing the county’s impact on climate change.

Velocity is King County’s eighth transit-oriented development. It is built to Washington State Evergreen standards for energy efficiency and long-term durability and incorporates other environmentally friendly elements. Residents – some coming out of homelessness and others with disabilities – will have easy access to bus service at the South Kirkland Park and Ride with connections to downtown Seattle, Bellevue, and Kirkland. They can take full advantage of bike storage, a bicycle repair station, and a 24-hour “One Bus Away” computer terminal in their main floor community room.
