After successfully passing their tests and receiving their Commercial Driver’s License, new Metro bus operators will move directly into full-time work. Previously, new drivers could only work part-time. Granting full-time status sooner will encourage more applicants, offer more opportunities and put more bus service on the road for our riders.
Metro’s employees also power Sound Transit Link, the fastest growing light rail network in the country. Metro is looking to fill hundreds of light rail operator positions in the coming year and encourages those who are interested in becoming a bus operator to also look at light rail positions. Other light rail openings include electricians, engineers, facilities professionals, mechanics and other roles with varying levels of experience and skills.
Keeping buses, trains, vans, vehicles and vessels moving supports the bright and sustainable future of our region and our expanding transit network. On Sept. 14, Metro will add more bus service hours—including at night and on weekends, provide new bus connections to Link light rail’s northward expansion to Lynnwood, and launch the new RapidRide G Line between Madison Valley and downtown Seattle.
Sound Transit will open four new 1 Line light rail stations—Shoreline South / 148th, Shoreline North / 185th, Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood City Center—on Aug. 30 and will push farther east, north, south and west in the years ahead.
In addition to bus and rail operator, there is a broad range of other positions at Metro–across communications, employee services, engineering, facilities, finance, law, marine, outreach, project management, rail, safety, vehicle maintenance and more.
Thanks to enterprise-level initiatives and the commitment of our employees, we’re proud to be delivering around 99% of service in recent months. We appreciate the support of ATU, Metro’s largest labor union, as we continue to seek ways to increase the capacity of our bus operator training program. Metro and ATU also recently partnered in the creation of “Mentors Moving Metro,” which pairs new and experienced bus operators to launch successful careers. We look forward to ongoing collaboration with ATU in support of our riders and employees.
