A flexible, affordable vanpool will transform your commute
If solo commuting is getting you down and gas prices are emptying your pocket, join a vanpool! King County Metro has a vanpool that suits you and your commute.
Vanpooling is similar to carpooling in which people share the driving and have a common route to work. With a vanpool, though, everything is included for the commute – the van, fuel, tolls, insurance, maintenance, roadside assistance and an emergency ride home program.
What’s an emergency ride home? As a Metro Vanpool or Vanshare participant, you may be reimbursed for emergency situations in which you are unable to ride home with your van. Take a cab, Uber or Lyft home and Metro will reimburse you for the ride. (In some cases, your employer may even reimburse you directly for an emergency ride home.)
Metro has one of the largest vanpool programs in the nation. Metro now has nearly 1,000 vanpool groups on the road—and many new ones forming every week.
Vanpools are flexible. You can vanpool even if you only need to go in a few days each week, do shift work or work weekends. Vanpools are inexpensive, too. The monthly fare for a vanpool is about the same as a monthly bus fare. Many employers subsidize vanpools, saving riders even more money. Check with your HR department!
With all the Metro vanpools traversing the region, the easiest way to start is to join an existing vanpool group. We’ll help you find one

Vanpooling isn’t just a ride – it’s a strategic, efficient and supportive community on the move! Vanpooling is a commuter’s dream come true.”
“Forget the solo car ride blues! My 45-minute Metro Vanpool commute to the office is now a social hour on wheels. Not only do I reach work on time, but I’ve made amazing friends, and learned new things from their diverse experiences. Just good vibes and knowledge sharing as we zip through Renton to Kirkland. From new restaurants to budget hacks, we’ve got each other covered.”
“We started off as a carpool, just a few of us–switching back and forth between drivers each week. When we were four people carpooling, we realized it was time to move into a van. That’s when the benefits really started showing; our company paid 100% of the costs, Metro covered the gas, maintenance/repairs and car washes. I got to see my personal gas costs drop, I no longer had to hunt for a parking spot, nor walk far in the rain to get into the building. As more people came on board, I started making more and more connections within the company, gaining new friends and confidants. The experience has been so positive for all of us. We have grown so big as to upgrade to the larger passenger van, and we are limiting the number of cars on the road, making an environmental impact.”
“I love the fact my job gave me an opportunity to join a Metro Vanpool and how easy it was to fill out the application. Being a primary driver, I have transportation to and from work, no gas to worry about and we all get to work in a timely, safe manner. Metro keeps up on the maintenance of my vehicle, provides me with a loaner when needed and is very helpful when I have questions. I’m so glad my company has them for commuter services.”
