Metro celebrates Pride month!
Yesterday , I had the opportunity to raise the Pride Progress Flag at several Metro worksites. This annual tradition is one of the ways Metro shows solidarity and support in standing with our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual (LGBTQIA+) and Two-Spirit family, friends, and colleagues. It was the perfect way for us to kick-off Pride Month celebrations.
Pride Month is recognized nationally in June every year in commemoration of its roots in the Stonewall Riots of 1969. The month is marked with bright colors and joy, recognizing communities that have long been marginalized and pressured to remain hidden. Pride Month celebrates the contributions made by the LGBTQIA+ community and wins for equality. It is also a time for us reflect on the work still that is needed. Across the country, hundreds of anti-trans laws continue to be proposed and the LGBTQIA+ community remains the subject of countless acts of violence and hate.
At Metro, we are committed to embracing our four “pro-equity compacts” (share power; interrupt business as usual; replace it with something better; and get comfortable with being uncomfortable) to better confront and dismantle behaviors that promote fear and intolerance. We each have a role in helping to make Metro a workplace where people are free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, and feel welcomed and supported, regardless of who they are or who they love. Together, we will continue to confront the inequities in our organization and region to enact meaningful change.
2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the Seattle Pride Parade, and Metro is thrilled to be part of the festivities! This year’s parade theme is Now!—honoring the original rallying cry for gay rights and queer visibility. Visit the Seattle Pride website to learn more.
